How the math works
Words per minute is words divided by minutes. Nothing else. If you said 300 words in 120 seconds, that is 300 ÷ 2, or 150 WPM. Going the other way, a 600-word script at 145 WPM takes 600 ÷ 145 minutes, about 4 minutes and 8 seconds. The calculator counts a word as any run of characters separated by whitespace, so "don't" is one word and "New York" is two. That matches how most transcription tools count, which matters if you want your numbers here to line up with numbers from an app.
What the ranges mean
The verdicts above are heuristics, not laws. For spoken English aimed at a general audience, clear delivery tends to sit around 130 to 160 WPM. Below 130 reads as measured and deliberate, which can be exactly right for a eulogy or a technical walkthrough and dead wrong for a sales pitch. From 160 to 180 is brisk. It works when the material is light and the audience knows the territory. Above 180, most listeners start dropping words. They catch the gist and lose the specifics, and the specifics are usually the point.
Pace also varies by language, audience, and material. Spanish and Japanese run at different syllable rates than English. A room of specialists can absorb dense material faster than a room of strangers. A story can move quicker than an argument. Treat the bands as a starting reference, then trust a recording of yourself over any number on a page.
Reading pace is not speaking pace
Here is the trap with mode two. You time yourself reading the script at your desk and it lands at 145 WPM. Then you deliver it for real and finish a minute early. Nerves compress speech. Under pressure most people speed up by 10 to 20 percent without noticing, because adrenaline makes fast feel normal. A script that reads at 150 WPM in rehearsal often comes out over 170 on stage.
Two practical corrections. First, if you are estimating run time for a live talk, pick 130 in the calculator even if you rehearse at 145. The buffer absorbs the speed-up. Second, measure your actual delivered pace, not your reading pace. Record a real take, count the words you actually said, and divide by the time it actually took. That number is the one that predicts how you sound to a listener.
One exercise: hear the difference
Numbers are abstract until you hear them. Take one 60-second passage, about 130 to 170 words of anything you know well. Record it twice. First take: aim for 130 WPM, roughly 130 words in the minute. It will feel slow. Second take: aim for 170 WPM. It will feel only slightly fast to you.
Now listen to both. The 130 take almost never sounds slow from the outside. It sounds composed. The 170 take usually sounds rushed, and the pauses that gave the first take its weight are gone. That gap between how a pace feels in your mouth and how it lands in a listener's ear is the whole reason to measure. Once you have heard it, you stop trusting the feeling and start trusting the number.
