Privacy Policy
Effective July 10, 2026 · Dictalus is made by Varsalus, Inc.
Dictalus is a speaking-practice coach: you record short spoken takes, we transcribe and score them, and you track your improvement. This policy explains exactly what we collect, why, and how you stay in control. The short version: you decide what happens to your audio — deleted the moment scoring finishes by default, or kept for listen-back if you choose (a Pro setting) — we keep the transcript and your scores, you can delete everything at any time, and we never sell your data or show ads.
What we collect
- Account information. Your email address (used to sign in via one-time codes or password) and, if you set one, a display name. Passwords are stored only as salted bcrypt hashes.
- Voice recordings. When you record a practice rep, the audio is sent to our servers, transcribed, and scored. You decide what happens to the audio file: by default it is permanently deleted the moment scoring finishes, or Pro members can choose in Settings to keep their recordings for listen-back. Either way we keep the transcript and the delivery scores (for example words-per-minute and filler counts).
- Practice data. Your transcripts, scores, streaks, progress, and any custom prompts you create.
- Optional profile. You may choose to share an age range, gender, native language, English level, profession, a practice goal, and a short bio. Every field is optional, used only to tailor your coaching, and can be cleared at any time in Settings.
- Usage and diagnostics. Basic app events (for example that a rep was recorded or synced) and error diagnostics, used to keep the product working. We do not use third-party advertising or cross-app tracking SDKs.
- Device timezone. Detected at sign-in so your daily practice counters roll over at your local midnight.
Consent for recording
Before your first-ever recording, the app shows a plain-language consent notice explaining what is captured and where it goes. Recording never starts without your explicit action, and the microphone is used only while you are recording a rep.
How we use your information
- To provide the product: transcribe and score your reps, show your trends, and keep your practice in sync across your devices.
- To tailor coaching content to the profile details you choose to share.
- To secure accounts (sign-in codes, password verification, rate limiting) and to debug problems.
We do not sell or rent your data, show ads, or use your voice, transcripts, or profile for advertising. We do not use your data to train third-party AI models.
Service providers
We use infrastructure providers to run our servers, deliver sign-in emails, and process payments if you subscribe. They process data on our behalf under agreements that restrict any other use.
If you turn on Fast scoring (an optional Pro setting, off by default), each rep's audio is sent to ElevenLabs for transcription and the transcript is returned to us for scoring. ElevenLabs processes the audio on our behalf under API terms that restrict it to providing the service, and our workspace opts out of having data used to improve their models. Leave the setting off and transcription happens entirely on our own servers.
Retention and deletion
- Audio: your choice. By default it is deleted automatically right after scoring — typically within minutes of your recording. If you enable "Keep my recordings" (a Pro setting), audio is kept so you can listen back, until you delete the rep (or your account) — deleting a rep always deletes its audio.
- Transcripts and scores: kept so you can see your history and trends — until you delete them. You can delete any individual rep, or everything, in the app.
- Your whole account: Settings → Delete account permanently removes your account and all associated data.
- Export: Settings → Export my data gives you a copy of your data in a portable format.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS). Passwords are hashed with bcrypt; sign-in codes are short-lived, single-use, and rate-limited. Changing your password signs out your other sessions.
Children
Dictalus is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information. The in-app tools above cover all of these; you can also email us and we will help.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update this page and the effective date above. Material changes will be highlighted in the app.
